Nokia and Motorola accused of patent infringements by ETRI

image

Nokia is in patent infringement trouble again, but at least has the company of Motorola, this time. While Nokia-Apple battle is raging, fuelled by fresh allegation from Nokia going at great lengths, the new year has brought its share of complaints, too.

The Korean state run Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) is stated to sue more than 20 mobile manufacturers including Nokia and Motorola over violation of 7 of its 3G standards, including WCDMA.

We know its all dust and air until enlightened on the value of the allegations. So be it. ETRI officials expect more than 300 billion won (USD 268 million) in royalties from suits worth around 1 trillion won (USD 893 million). Two unnamed companies are said to have already agreed for payment of 20 billion won (USD 17.86million).

Well, if you thought what ETRI is and how come the damages going that far, learn that ETRI is the one which commercialized CDMA for the first time in the world in 1996, currently hold remarkably around 170 patents for international standards.

Lets see how Nokia holds up with Apple on the one side and ETRI on the other side.

Orange France linked with Apple tablet, quite cleverly

image

When was the last time you tested you interpretation skills? No matter when, here’s chance. See for yourself.

Orange’s Stephane Richard confirms that an Apple tablet is coming up. He again confirms that it will benefit Orange France users. That is it. Now decide for yourself what you probability theory suggest you on this. Fill in the comments column to let us know.

Find the original text in French and it translation here. I agree to what Chris Davies at Slashgear noted:

We’re cautious about accepting this at face value for a number of reasons, not least that we’d expect a carrier exec to be more media-savvy when it comes to prematurely scooping Apple’s always-secret wares.

Enterprise user segment and physical keyboard linked to Google’s Nexus One’s successor

image

Google’s Nexus One is the best android device till date, but signs of possible improvement in its successor have started boiling up. Reuters believe that the Google Inc executive Andy Rubin highlighted that in an interview and the improvement we’re talking about could be the presence of physical keyboard and dedication to enterprise user segment.

It might be Nexus Two or maybe just the ‘One’ of second series of Smartphone for entrepreneurs. I am more inclined towards the latter as it’ll help in better market segmentation. Anyways, threats to Blackberry cannot be simply overlooked as also to other Windows mobile handsets.

Nothing official as of now is available but looking at how closely HTC and Google have been working on with each other beginning from G1 to Android market to the latest Nexus One and touch screen tablets, HTC can bag the manufacturing contract quite comfortably, and unsurprisingly. Have your voice heard on the possible Nexus Two.

Nokia’s Gig finder for S60 v5, an AIO app for music concerts

A tweet tells you that one of your fav artist is gonna perform in your town or nearby. You surely want to etch the performance in your memory lane. What do you do? What… trying out some iPhone app. Good try but suppose you are a Nokia user, and please include the touch screen too.. our discussion is based on this..so.

Okay, straightforward to the point, if any such thing happens, then Nokia’s Gig Finder app for its touchscreen handsets (that’s S60 v5) will make it a lot easier for you. Find out how after the break.

image image

Currently available only in US, Canada, UK and Ireland, this app really makes a point in helping users finding out live and upcoming shows of their fav artists. It analyses search patterns and can come up with suggestions also. How well it does that, now that depends on you. You can search by artist, place, genre, city, venue. date range and combination of any of the above, as suitable to you.

If you drilled out something worthy, you can share it via facebook, SMS or mail. Pretty cool…hmmm. Now you plan the show and purchase the tickets and for that, you don’t need to look anywhere outside your mobile. the app has this facility also. And finally as you readied yourself up for the show, app will direct you to the maps to follow and attend the show, the very purpose of all of this.

But you simply can’t ignore the songs, maybe a couple or more of them ringing still very loud inside your mind. And you want to download them while your journey back to home. Time to switch to Gig Finder again. Search, locate and download them at the Nokia Ovi store after the app directs you there.

Ok here is the download link for the app. That is it. A complete tool for music concert experience. And that too from Nokia. Amazing it is .... Don’t you think Nokia has come up with something that goes at par with an ideal iPhone app, rather than a new series of allegation of breach of patents. Good for a change.

WM7 delayed and manufacturers shifting due to that, just in Rumor

Windows Moible 7 2011

Oh! that’s not a good news for those waiting eagerly (maybe) for WM7. The rumor has it that long awaited upgrade of Windows Mobile 7 might get delayed to 2011, deleting the earlier end of 2010 date. Strange named BrightSideofNews (BSN) has asserted that a chat (indeed formal) with various reps of Microsoft, Lenovo, Qualcomm, TI, Nokia, nVidia, HTC and many more had ‘just one message’ that WM7 has been postponed to 2011 and ‘sacrifice’ comes in the form of manufacturers of mobile phones and tablets shifting to Android and seeking possibilities of Chrome OS. Android benefits much from this and that might also explain why so many manufacturers are trying their hands out on Android, apart from it being free.

But I don’t see much connection in talking to reps of as many Companies as mentioned. Even for a rumor or otherwise, talks with reps from Microsoft would have sufficed. Right said, but…. hmm I see that’s why so many Companies are involved, maybe to assert, to confirm… ok we take it. Don’t you think discussion with Apple reps would have added more spice to it. Ok, agreed, that’s really absurd one from me. But can you explain link with Nokia, surely not, I know.

Anyways… we will keep gazing until an official word comes out. Lets see if guys at BSN cover us more on this in future. But hey.. what was the bright side of news, anyway. Huh?

Engadget gets updates on the upcoming, very promising mobile handset, the First Else

image

There are a lot of Nexus One reviews and comparisons with iPhone, the arch rival of every promising Smartphone and just like always iPhone seems to have an upper hand this time also. So after Nexus one, what else we got… Did we say ELSE, then we really have an option in ‘First Else’. Read on to know what we meant by it.

Else, formerly known as Emablaze Mobile discussed with Engadget about how things have been going on for their first mobile device, the First Else. Seems like visual effects should be the catch as the Company seems dedicated to bring in something great, if not revolutionary. Basic functions on the Access Linux Platform (ALP) are done and we should expect more on pricing, launch date and full specs very soon.

Right now, Else does not intend to launch it in Asia at the first Go, but Q2 launch is confirmed for US and Europe. Anyways, Asians are clever at getting what they want, one way or another. Isn’t it?

Lets discuss specs released back in November by Engadget. It’s got a decent TI OMAP 3430 processor (also in Droid and palm Pre), 854 x 480 3.5” capacitive LCD touch screen and 1450 mAh battery along with nowadays standard 5MP camera which here is capable of shooting 480p video at 30fps. Sounds really good. But will it pose any challenge to iPhone or Nexus One when released in Q2, it hard to tell until we have full specs and other details and video to form a complete opinion. Surely, things do look promising, very promising indeed. What do you guys think?

Did something struck you with Q2 launch date? No. Ok, read on to find…. remind yourself that we have iPhone4G , first else and the Moto Shadow all geared up to hit the streets somewhere in mid-year. Well… that equals new iPhone and new iPhone killers, for 2010, until HTC surprises us with something other and a lot better than the already ruled out Smart series.

Android 2.1 update confirmed for CLIQ, DROID, Backflip, DEXT and Milestone

motorola milestone 540x450

While Motorola US announced update of Android’s 2.1 version on CLIQ, DROID and Backflip just a few day ago, Moto Europe came up with the same for DEXT and Milestone. Icing on the cake, isn’t it. The Company on its facebook profile disclosed that DEXT and Milestone will also feature the latest version of Android, 2.1.

Also, an intermediate update would reach Milestone, just like they announced earlier for Droid. This update is meant to solve camera’s poor performance, bring in GPS and in-call audio improvements, better Bluetooth functionality and overall speed tweaks.

Nothing as of right now is available on when update will reach the handsets. Gotta wait to hear it officially. That is it.

Sony Ericsson showcases Pureness, Elm, Hazel and the Xperia X2

SE made the good out of CES by showcasing as much as 4 of its phones and also took initiative to display black and white shades of the lovely Xperia X10. So… lets … discuss phones right away.

image

We take SE Pureness first. Why? It’s something different, although nothing near to breathtaking! The device is rather charming thanks to its transparent screen. And just like you thought, these kind of phones suit one who fads too often, not a techie like you and me. Still wanna know cost, it will make you purse lighter by grand $1000, yes around double the cost of the best of android, the Nexus One. That all for 1.8” of monochrome display which one would surely avoid in sunlight, white or any lighter background. ?? Remember that transparency, it makes using the screen in sunlight quite uncomfortable. So what’s the selling point.. I can’t resist from giving a thought to it. Maybe, gift it to your GF for use in discotheque! Write in other possible selling points… maybe SE will benefit out of this if any of their well-wishers stumbles upon your comment.

image

If pureness belonged to fassionate cum discotheque kinda people, there is something for the lovers of ever generous mother nature also. Burn the thoughts of Copenhagen meeting aside, this one from SE, the Elm, uses recycled plastics to form a body, which packs in a power saving charger and some green apps. It is impressive to find a 5MP camera with LED flash capable of detecting face. Add to that, integration with facebook and twitter and A-GPS to complete the little both, maybe made from recycled materials.

image

Elm doesn’t end the adventure for go-green gung ho lovers, the Hazel is the next one to entertain. Featuritically, same as Elm but the look at the pic can tell the difference. While Elm is a candy bar, hazel is a slider, thus one more choice to green at heart customers of mobiles.

image

Finally we arrive at Xperia X2, a phone worthy of discussion of a techie. An 8.1MP camera with auto/touch focus like iPhone coupled with Windows mobile 6.5 touch screen aided by qwerty keyboard makes it a decent Smartphone. SlideView feature lets you quickly access your favorite apps and WiFi, DLNA media server support and TV out complete the package.

That is it for now. Give a moment for comments.
